But it is time to double down defense vs the B.1.1.7 superspreader strain. That is what is next up.

~23,000 dead in the past week. If this trend continues or worsens, that's at least 100,000 dead per month. 500,000 dead by March 1 or before. Don't become numb to the numbers.

Our paper, "An evidence review of face masks against COVID-19", written by a cross-disciplinary team of 19 international experts, was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences today.
No time for the paper? Then read this thread!
So proud to be a co-author on this paper, “An evidence review of face masks against COVID-19”, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences @PNASNews today.
(Spoiler alert: #masks work, so #MaskUp).
Perspective: Mask wearing, in conjunction with hygiene, distancing, and contact tracing, can substantially reduce #COVID19 transmission by reducing infected aerosol and droplet emission. In PNAS:

The post-Christmas surge of coronavirus cases is worsening considerably in Los Angeles County. The coming days are expected to be critical in determining how bad this next surge will get and how much it will affect conditions at hospitals.
Angelenos:“The number of people dying from #COVID19 daily is now exceeding the avg. number of deaths in LA County for all other causes, including heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, car crashes, suicides + homicides, which is ~170 deaths/day.”
Please #stayhome if you can.

Feeling very grateful to have received my first #COVID19 #vaccine dose. My arm is a little sore, but otherwise no side effects.
Please get #vaccinated when it’s your turn. If you have questions about the vaccine or the process please ask. I’ll be happy to share my experience.

Great conversation on "Doc to Doc" with Dr Anne Rimoin @arimoin , epidemiologist at UCLA. Talked about the surge, vaccines and the new variant. Answered the question "if you and I have the vaccine can we hang out".
Thanks @DrJohnTorres for hosting me on “Doc to Doc”. We had a great conversation on the current #COVID19 surge in Los Angeles, new variants and the vaccine.

I’ve written a lot in the last two weeks about #B117 and the uncertainty surrounding its exact effects.
So let me talk about something that we can be pretty certain about: what we should be doing.
New story is here:
Quick thread to come.
A very important thread and article by @kakape about #B117 variant and implications.
Bottom line: “So what is it we should be doing to keep #B117 from spreading or to prepare for it? Well, what we should have been doing all along: pushing infections down to very low levels.”

One in five residents currently tested is infected with COVID-19. Your bubble is not as safe as you think it is. Don't meet up with those outside your household.
Listen up, Angelenos, because this is important: “One in five residents currently tested is infected with #COVID-19. Your bubble is not as safe as you think it is. “

Replying to @JenAshleyWright: After 2020 I'm never going to question why they keep opening up Jurassic Park despite obvious safety issues.
Thanks to @jolingkent for hosting me on @MSNBC this morning. 2020 is over, but #COVID19 is still with us. We all can play a part in reducing spread by masking up, social distancing, avoiding gatherings and staying home if possible. Wishing everyone a happier and healthier 2021.
After 2020 I'm never going to question why they keep opening up Jurassic Park despite obvious safety issues.

L.A. County Surpasses 10,000 COVID-19 Deaths as New Year's Eve Approaches. 274 New Deaths and 10,392 New Confirmed Cases of COVID-19 in Los Angeles County. View for more.
2 months ago, LA County had ~1200 #COVID19 cases/day. This past week, we had ~13K new cases/day: a 10x increase in daily cases in just 2 mo.
You are much more likely to come in contact w/someone w/ #COVID19 today than 2 mo ago- so please rethink any NYE plans w/this in mind.
